Notice of Race

Event: IOS Round the Island Race
Date: Saturday 11th September 2010
Place: IOS Sailing Club, Marine Parade, Sheerness, Kent ME12 2BE
Organising Authority: IOS Sailing Club

1. Waiver of liability
1.1 IOSSC is providing this race only on the understanding that nothing done by the organisers can reduce the responsibility of the helms and crew for their safety and welfare nor will it make the organisers responsible for any loss, damage, death or personal injury, however it may have occurred, as a result of a boat taking part in the race. The term organisers includes everyone helping to run the race and the event, and includes the organising authority, the race committee, the race officer, patrol boats and beachmasters.
1.2 The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be entirely the responsibility of the helm racing the boat. Nothing, whether in the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions or anywhere else, reduces this responsibility. In particular, helms shall: (a) accept full responsibility for their crews and for the seaworthiness and safe navigation of their boats and shall use their own judgment whether to start, continue or retire from a race in the existing or forecast conditions (RRS 4); (b) draw the attention of their crews to the risks of racing and to this Waiver of Liability before the start of any race.
1.3 Every boat should be capable of completing the course in whatever conditions are encountered. Particular note should be made of the possibility of being reliant upon your own resources for a protracted period, even returning after dark or in fog.
1.4 The provision of patrol boats does not relieve the helm of his/her responsibilities.
1.5 All boats must have third party liability insurance (min. £2,000,000).

2. The rules
Racing will be governed by the "rules" as defined in the Racing Rules of
Sailing 2009-2012 (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA, this Notice of Race, except as any of these are changed by the Sailing Instructions and by the relevant class rules.

3. Conditions of entry and eligibility
3.1 The race is open to all dinghies, catamarans and sailboards, but any dinghy or catamaran without a Portsmouth Number should contact the club before the day of the race to arrange a provisional number.
3.2 Helms must be 16 or over unless evidence of competence is presented to the OOD.
3.3 The organising authority reserves the right to reject any entry and to limit entries on the day.
3.4 In the event of the race being canceled, the organising authority may at its discretion offer a 50% refund of the entry fee.

4. Advertising
The event will rank as a category C event in accordance with RRS Appendix 1.

5. Safety
5.1 Adequate personal buoyancy for all crew members shall be worn at all times whilst afloat. This changes RRS 40.
5.2 Safety boats will give priority to the safety of competitors over preventing damage to boats or equipment.
5.3 All competitors shall sign on by posting their personal safety tag in the "I have started" slot of the tally box before going afloat, and shall post their safety tag in the "I have finished" slot of the tally box immediately after finishing. Boats that have retired must post their safety tag in the "I have retired" slot of the tally box.

6. Registration
Registration will take place in the main hall of the club from 8am.

7. The course
The course will be a clockwise circumnavigation of the Isle Of Sheppey starting and finishing through a line off of the IOSSC.

8. The start
The first start will be at 10.00 hrs.

9. Time limit
Competitors must complete the course before 8pm to be included in the final results.
